- <p> For months, basketball wizard and U.S. AIDS commissioner
- MAGIC JOHNSON has refereed George Bush's war on the epidemic --
- and cried foul. Almost as soon as he stepped into his new post,
- Magic began a full-court press to increase funds for aids
- research and treatment -- and met with frustration. Now the
- HIV-positive athlete has in essence issued an ultimatum -- if
- there is no move to increase the AIDS budget by the time he
- returns from the Barcelona Olympics, he will quit. "He does not
- believe the President is doing enough," says Johnson's
- spokesman, Lon Rosen. Johnson has also said he would not be
- supporting Bush for re-election. Anyone who thought Magic would
- be a figurehead knows better now.
